Project Summary

Colorado Rural Housing Development Corporation (CRHDC) placed modular homes in a new Alamosa subdivision, combining factory-built construction with on-site work through its SHOP program. Clayton built the ENERGY STAR®-certified homes at its Karsten facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Each home has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and roughly 1,500 square feet. Next Step supported the project with technical assistance, specification design, and a connection to the factory.

When they started building these houses, me and my mom were passing by looking for a house and we saw this, and I told her, “Mom, one of those houses is going to be mine, one of these days.” So when I bought it, she said, “Oh, you looked and you saw and you said it was going to be yours!”

Jennifer Quintana
Homeowner
  • Jennifer Quintana, a Head Start teacher and parent of two, bought one of the homes in 2017. After moving from a small apartment, she says her family now has more space, more privacy, and bedrooms their children can make their own.
  • Jennifer describes the home as more comfortable year-round, with warmth that stays in and utility costs she can plan around. She says that gives her room in her budget to save.
  • CRHDC paired factory-built homes with on-site construction, which made the homes more attainable for buyers in the community.
  • Next Step helped CRHDC design the home specifications and connect with Clayton’s factory. It also supported CRHDC’s community outreach and advocacy for factory-built housing.
